What Makes A Senior Home Feel Like Home?

When you hear the words “senior home” you might imagine…

  • a cold, sterile space with clinical rooms and few creature comforts.

  • senior men and women, alone in their rooms with little to entertain or comfort them.

  • a space that is only for the critically ill or elderly people affected by Alzheimer’s Disease, dementia or Parkinson’s.

While this might have been the case in years gone by, times have changed—for the better. Nowadays, senior living spaces can be warm, inviting and feel like a home away from home—when they are built with intention and care.

Bob’s Place, our short-term respite care space in Kawartha Lakes, is a perfect example of a care space that feels like home. As part of Purple House Services, Bob’s Place was built around three core qualities: comfort, community, and care. Find out more about how Bob’s Place is setting the example for how a short-term respite care space can feel like home.

Comfort Is Key

When residents in a respite care space feel comfortable, they can relax, connect and enjoy a better quality of life. But to feel comfortable, residents need more than plush couches and pleasing decor. They need an atmosphere that allows them to feel safe and at home.

To make Bob’s Place feel like a home away from home for our senior residents, we made sure to provide the following.

Amenities

We don’t believe that a respite care space needs to be built like a hospital to provide quality care, even for residents with more complex medical needs. Nobody wants a bedroom that feels like a hospital room or a living room that looks more like the waiting room at a clinic. That’s why we chose to build Bob’s Place in an existing home. Each of our 10 rooms and common spaces is furnished for comfortable living, not clinical care. It feels like home because it is a home complete with sofas, area rugs, plants, a fireplace and even a piano.

Privacy

Whether our senior guests are with us for simple respite care or because their families need support tending to their more complex medical needs, privacy and comfort go hand in hand. To that end, every senior has their own room where they can rest, be alone and meet with caregivers. They also have access to the shared common spaces where they can be in the company of other residents and their care team. Having the choice to be alone or to be with others is essential for comfort and autonomy.

Atmosphere

A home is a place where people live. At Bob’s Place, light, colour, and familiar decor work together to create a light, friendly and welcoming space. Bedrooms and common spaces have windows, beautiful and functional furniture, and plenty of character with rugs, lamps, and other creature comforts. The open shared spaces invite togetherness, and our friendly, smiling staff are there to facilitate community.

Ensuring our senior residents feel comfortable, body and mind, is just one of the ways we make our short-term respite care space feel like home.

Community: A Feeling Of Belonging

A community is about more than games and group activities. A real community is a group of people being there for each other and feeling like they belong. In Bob’s Place respite care space, community is created with choice and opportunity and nurtured by our caring team of PSWs and RNs.

Residents at Bob’s Place have

  • The opportunity to connect with peers and caregivers on their own terms.

  • Access to open, common spaces that create opportunities for connection.

  • The support of a welcoming staff who are always on hand to invite participation without pushing boundaries.

  • The option of participating in programming that appeals to different interests and abilities.

  • The opportunity to build independent friendships with peers.

At Bob’s Place, our ability to nurture community among residents and staff is one reason the people we care for and their families say our respite care space feels like a home away from home.

You Can’t Have A Home Without Care

At the heart of any quality respite care space should be care. At Bob’s Place, you can see care in everything we do.

You can see the care we take with the people we support in the way

  • Our skilled, experienced and compassionate RNs and PSWs build real relationships with the people in their care.

Home Is Where The Heart Is

The team at Bob’s place takes great pride in giving families the peace of mind that comes from knowing their loved ones are receiving the high-quality care they deserve in a comfortable, community-oriented, home-like respite care space.

When a short-term respite care space is built around the cornerstones of comfort, community and care, it can feel like a home away from home for the seniors who stay there. Bob’s Place strives to centre these three ideas in the day-to-day management of our respite care space and, judging by the smiles on our residents’ faces, we think we’re succeeding.
